Peter Pan Live Play Review!

Peter Pan Live Review!

(Picture does not Belong to me)
The Peter Pan Live play is based off the animated Disney movie “Peter Pan”. I don’t usually watch plays but in my drama class we had to do a review about it so here it goes. I’m going to start off by saying I don’t like this play; the ending really ruined it for me. The script is very similar to the original movie and includes the characters Wendy, her brothers (John and Michael), her parents, her dog, Peter Pan, Tinkerbelle, the Lost Boys, Captain Hook, Smithy, The crew and Tigerlilly and her tribe. Tigerlilly is the only strong female character in this play and she reminds me of Pocahontas with the way she stalked Captain Hook’s crew and danced with her tribe. And may I say now, there is A LOT of dancing and singing in this play, (it is a musical after all). The rest of the female characters were absolutely ANNOYING! From Wendy wanting to kiss an unknown boy who just flew into her bedroom to Tinkerbelle’s annoying sound she did every time she talked. The brothers didn’t even talk much; they were just there. All of the Lost Children were pretty convincing with their acts that I almost believed that they were in fact ‘lost children’ despite their heights and facial features. Smithy, (Captain Hook’s right hand man), was very energetic with the way he danced and acted. Captain hook himself was ok; he didn’t even sing, just shout out rhymes, barely danced, and kept a very plain facial expression even when he heard the crocodile (who ate his hand) nearby. The croc did look scary but not in a ‘danger! Danger!’ way, but more in a ‘what is that?’ way. If I’m correct, crocodiles aren’t purple, so why did they make the crocodile purple and not green?
Peter Pan was played by a girl, and that makes sense. It would be odd to hear an adult guy sing in a low voice when boys that age don’t have that low of a voice. The design crew did a really good job with making all the costumes look realistic and making Peter Pan look like a boy. I would give the design crew an A+. Wendy’s house set looks proportional with fog making the house look tall. The sets take a turn for the worse when Peter Pan takes Wendy and her brothers to NeverLand.  It’s so obvious that they are just hanging from strings with blue painted wood planks behind them. It’s even worse when they actually get to NeverLand and the word “Neverland” is written on the floor and you see a whole bunch of blue trees. Is this Peter Pan or the Lorax!? The outside shots of Captain Hook’s ship looks like a toy model, although I did like the inside of the ship.  This must have been where most of the production budget went to. I also like the way Perter Pan’s house spun.

Like I said before, this is a musical and they sing a lot.  So much that it made me want to turn the audio off and just watch the whole play with subtitles. That wasn’t even the worst part.  It seemed like almost all of the characters seemed to lack common sense. This is especially true for Wendy. If you are a girl and you wake up in the middle of the night to see a boy looking around, what is your first reaction? Get up and ask the boy ‘”what are you looking for?” I didn’t think so. If that was me I would grab my bat and scream for help. Ok, so if you do ask the boy what he’s looking for, and he replies with “my shadow”, and you help him sew his shadow on, and he sings and dances, and you talk to each other briefly, will you consider yourself in love with that boy? Or want to give him a kiss 5 to 10 minutes after you met him!? NO! You don’t kiss a person you’ve just met! Peter Pan and Captain Hook get into a musical fight and it is the worst cat fight I have ever seen. Pete Pan is basically flying around singing while Captain Hook just watches him fly threatening him. It looked as if they were teasing each other like old friends. Hook captures everyone except for Peter and Tink. Peter wakes up and wants to take his medicine but Tink won’t let him and drinks it instead. It turned out to be poisoned and it was killing Tink fast. Peter turned so desperate to save Tink that he did something only Deadpool can do effectively; he looked straight into a camera to talk directly to the audience and asked them to chant something to save Tinkerbelle. So all this time Peter Pan knew he was a fictional character!?  Later Hook and Peter fight again on the ship were Peter Pan ultimately wins with the help of his friends and he tells Hook he has to walk off the plank. Hook puts on a little show before jumping into the sea with the croc. Ok… Hook is gone and everyone goes to London (except for Peter) and Wendy’s mother doesn’t even question her kids where they went or how they just appeared at the window. I guess she’s just too happy to see her children again to care. Wendy’s father even adopts all the Lost Children. He doesn’t even know where they have been or how they know his children…Wendy waits forever for Peter Pan to return, and when he does, she’s all grown up! What did you expect Peter!? Time does things to people. Wendy’s daughter wakes up and she tells Peter she wants to go to Neverland with him and surprisingly Wendy let’s her go even after all the danger she’s been through. Even worse, she promises Peter that when her daughter returns, she will have a daughter that with go to Neverland with him and so on and so forth. Wow. That is just so wrong on so many levels. This just ruins the play for me, Wendy, I have had enough of you. So if you were planning on watching Peter Pan Live with your kids anytime soon, don’t. It sends a terrible message. I hope next time they decide to do Peter Pan Live they will learn from their mistakes.
